The Dairy Share: Our First Attempt at Making Butter

The Dairy Share: Our First Attempt at Making Butter

At Humble Human Acres, we believe in learning by doing, and in this episode, we’re excited to share our first-ever attempt at making butter from fresh cream sourced straight from the farm. Not only was this a big milestone in our homesteading journey, but it also gave us a chance to reflect on the blessings that have come our way—especially through our connection with Gibbs Bacon n’ Eggs Farm.

A Special Partnership with Gibbs Bacon n’ Eggs Farm

One of the true joys of homesteading has been building relationships with local farmers who share our values of sustainability and high-quality, farm-fresh products. Our partnership with Gibbs Bacon n’ Eggs Farm in Germantown, Ohio has been an absolute blessing. Their dedication to raising animals ethically and producing top-notch farm products has made a huge impact on our lives—and we’re excited to see how we can continue to support one another as we grow.

Through this partnership, we were able to get our hands on fresh cream from their cows, and it sparked the idea to make butter right at home. It’s moments like these—learning new skills, connecting with nature, and working alongside those who share our passions—that make this journey so rewarding.

Making Butter: A Homesteading Milestone

For us, making butter was more than just an act of food preparation; it was a symbolic step in our homesteading journey. It’s about reclaiming lost skills, getting back to basics, and truly understanding where our food comes from. Here’s how we did it:

 Step 1: Gathering the Ingredients

We started with fresh, high-quality cream from Gibbs Bacon n’ Eggs Farm. Using a mason jar and a little bit of elbow grease, we shook the cream until it thickened and eventually turned into butter.

Step 2: The Process

The process was surprisingly simple, but it took some time and patience. As we shook the jar, we watched the cream separate into butter and buttermilk. The entire experience reminded us how much we take for granted in the grocery store. The satisfaction of making butter from scratch was more rewarding than we expected.

Step 3: The Result

After draining the buttermilk and rinsing the butter with cold water, we ended up with the most rich, creamy homemade butter. The flavor was incredible, and it was a real taste of the effort we put in. It felt so fulfilling to know that we made something ourselves that’s truly wholesome and natural.
